"...Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you...? (Matthew 28:19-20)

Mission Statement

Through the power of God's Holy Spirit, we will work to seek and save the lost by proclaiming the Gospel in word and deed, in order to make mature Disciples of Christ who share Him with others.

Novosibirsk, Russia

The work in Novosibirsk, Russia, began when a small group of five couples from the Smyrna congregation wanted to reach out to the lost in Russia. Since the October Revolution of November 7, 1917, the state religion of Russia had been Atheism and Christians had be persecuted. Many church buildings were confiscated and used for secular purposes such as libraries or arsenals. However, the political climate began changing in the late 1980s under Mikhail Gorbachev. New political and social freedoms allowed churches to once again own buildings and conduct religious services.

In the spring of 1990, a letter (Page 1, Page 2) was received by World Christian Broadcasting in Franklin, Tennessee, requesting Bibles and teaching materials for a course on Christian religion to be offered at the Novosibirsk Pedagogical Institute.

After several months of correspondence (from David Young), the dream became a reality in February 1991 when a small group from Smyrna traveled to Novosibirsk to teach a seminar about the Bible. Three people were baptized during that first visit.

For the next 10 years (1991-2001), the church was nurtured by regular visits and annual Bible camps. In January 2001, a team of 2 missionaries, Rick and Laura Chambless, arrived in Novosibirsk and were soon joined by 2 more missionaries, David Edmonds and Stacy Hanks. This team worked fulltime with the church until March 2005. Since 2005, the Smyrna Church no longer provides financial support to the work; however, we continue to correspond, pray, and visit with the members on a regular basis.
